Undoubtely, one of the most outstanding creations of Havana popular art is that charming and anonymous work which we shall refer as "Oquendo's Wagon". It consist on a high relief , about three meter wide, which as unique irony ,garnishes a garage cornice of a local which many long years ago must shelter a train of wagons.

A quite delicate trimming, so baroque, frames and isolates it from the sky, projecting out on a contrast of light and shadows.

Two little mules, finely harnessed pull the wagon. Because of their accurate representation, the delicate molding of their heads, the delicate of their details, those little mules evoke in my mind the image of those light-hoof donkeys, traditionals and dociles that fill Toledo streets, and complete, necessarily, every Castile landscape.
No bluntness at all on the drawing or design of the figures allows us to smile facing the precise technique of the artisan who created them...
Only one naif detail at the back of the wagon, becomes visible a wagoner foot, making susceptible of touch a human presence in the ensemble.

Together with a pig, carved on black wood, that I have seen in Regla; with the actual size horse, which misteriously stands at the countryside, one kilometer far from "El Lucero", "Oquendo's Wagon" becomes one of the most perfect examples of popular sculpture which I was able to admire in Havana.Alejo Carpentier
